A high nitrate concentration makes water unsuitable for drinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In rivers, lakes, and marine waters, nitrogen and other nutrients\u2014particularly phosphorus\u2014stimulate algae growth. At moderate levels, algae serve as food for aquatic organisms, including fish. However, excessive nutrient concentration in water systems leads to overgrowth of algae. This disrupts the natural ecosystem and can cause oxygen depletion in the water. This phenomenon, known as eutrophication, has negative consequences for biodiversity, fisheries, and recreational activities (Directorate-General for the Environment, European Commission).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22988930\" style=\"width: 502px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22988930\" class=\"wp-image-22988930 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/grupooperativoacceso.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/grafico-1.png\" alt=\"GOS ACCESO\" width=\"492\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grupooperativoacceso.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/grafico-1.png 492w, https:\/\/grupooperativoacceso.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/grafico-1-480x309.png 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 492px, 100vw\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-22988930\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 1: The Nitrogen Cycle (European Commission).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Solution: European Regulation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response, the EU adopted the Nitrates Directive in 1991, aimed at protecting water quality across Europe by preventing agricultural nitrate pollution of soil, groundwater, and surface water.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This directive seeks to reduce water pollution caused by nitrates used in agriculture through:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitoring nitrate concentrations in water bodies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designation of Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establishing codes of good agricultural practices and measures to prevent and reduce nitrate pollution<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Current Situation in Spain<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrate pollution in Spain is monitored through sampling and water quality surveillance programs that are part of the control networks defined in river basin management plans. These networks allow for monitoring of surface water, groundwater, and protected zones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This map shows the areas designated as <\/span><b>Nitrate Vulnerable Zones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (GEOPORTAL, MAP).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22988932\" style=\"width: 632px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22988932\" class=\"wp-image-22988932 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/grupooperativoacceso.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/grafico-2.png\" alt=\"GOS ACCESO\" width=\"622\" height=\"526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grupooperativoacceso.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/grafico-2.png 622w, https:\/\/grupooperativoacceso.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/grafico-2-480x406.png 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 622px, 100vw\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-22988932\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 2: Interactive map with Nitrate Vulnerable Zones layer: GEOPORTAL (MAP).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Good Practices Manual for Nitrate Vulnerable Zones<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some recommended practices include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding crop nitrogen fertilization needs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improving soil health through agroecological practices such as crop rotation, use of soil microorganisms, and cover crops<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calculating the mineral nitrogen content in the soil<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Determining the optimal timing for fertilizer application, avoiding over-application<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calculating the nitrogen contribution from irrigation water<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using efficient irrigation systems and applying water at the right time to prevent nitrate leaching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using sensors, such as soil moisture or nitrate probes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fertigation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> enables precise nutrient delivery to crops. Small and frequent fertilizer applications tailored to crop requirements increase nutrient uptake efficiency and minimize nutrient losses through leaching (AGROGESTOR).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>GOS ACCESS: Maize in Le\u00f3n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, some areas in Le\u00f3n\u2014the main corn-producing region in Spain\u2014are classified as <\/span><b>Nitrate Vulnerable Zones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To address this challenge, this project has implemented field trials on a corn farm in El P\u00e1ramo Leon\u00e9s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our goal is to reduce dependency on nitrogen fertilizers by planting legumes that enrich the soil before corn sowing. Additionally, we conduct soil analyses to determine initial nitrogen content and monitor it throughout the crop cycle. To enhance soil health and nutrient availability, we also apply products based on beneficial microorganisms.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What\u2019s the issue?
