The Spanish project <\/span>GOS ACCESO<\/b><\/span><\/a> took center stage during the EU CAP Network’s workshop focused on \u201cOptimising Water Use Practices in Annual and Perennial Crops,\u201d<\/a> held in Thessaloniki on May 7\u20138. Representing the project, <\/span>Javier Arizmendi Ruiz<\/b><\/span>, Technical Coordinator from <\/span>ZERYA<\/b><\/span><\/a>, presented its innovative approach to integrating agroecological practices within the framework of CAP eco-schemes.<\/span><\/p>\n

GOS ACCESO is a <\/span>supra-regional operational group<\/b><\/span> that tests sustainable practices in four strategically selected crops \u2014 maize, processing tomato, persimmon, and pear \u2014 under different agronomic conditions. The project aims to demonstrate that adopting eco-schemes can lead to improvements in crop productivity, soil and plant health, and resilience to climate change, even for crops not currently required to implement such schemes under the CAP.<\/span><\/p>\n

During his presentation, Arizmendi emphasized the project’s <\/span>multifactorial assessment strategy<\/b><\/span>, which combines agroecological techniques, precision agriculture, and digital tools. Practices include <\/span>cover crops that support beneficial insects<\/b><\/span>, <\/span><\/a>direct sowing<\/b><\/span> to enhance water retention in maize, and <\/span>legume rotations<\/b><\/span> to boost soil fertility. The impact of these interventions is evaluated using a set of <\/span>agronomic, economic, and environmental indicators<\/b><\/span>, supported by soil sensors, dendrometers, and microbiome analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n

GOS ACCESO received one of the <\/span>top five evaluation scores<\/b><\/span> among over 150 proposals in 2024, underscoring its potential for transferability and scalability across the EU. “Our goal is to make eco-schemes more accessible through applied knowledge, smart farming tools, and tailored farmer training,” said Arizmendi. The project also promotes <\/span>EU-wide collaboration<\/b><\/span>, policy alignment with sustainability goals, and digital transformation in agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n

Participation in this cross-visit offered GOS ACCESO an opportunity to highlight how <\/span>practical innovation and field-level testing<\/b><\/span> can help transform eco-schemes from policy requirements into <\/span>real opportunities<\/b><\/span> for farmers.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
