As part of the direct allocations under the strategic plans of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), a number of interventions have been designed as decoupled payments specifically aimed at protecting the climate and the natural environment. These interventions, known as eco-schemes, encourage sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. <\/p>\n
Such incentives are linked to activities including carbon farming and advanced agro-ecological techniques. These measures seek to enhance soil quality and structure, boost soil carbon reserves, mitigate erosion and halt desertification. They also help to minimise greenhouse gas emissions and increase biodiversity in agricultural ecosystems, thereby promoting the preservation of landscapes and natural resources. <\/p>\n
These practices are voluntary. In this regard, they seek to go beyond the mandatory minimums established by cross-compliance regulations, offering an additional and proactive commitment to sustainability. <\/p>\n

These prevent the abandonment of grasslands and protect habitats and endangered species. Many insect species, such as certain Lepidoptera, use species found in grasslands as a substrate for reproduction and nutrition, for example. The main objective is to increase the soil’s capacity as a carbon sink, thereby reducing its susceptibility to the effects of climate change. <\/p>\n Additionally, the formation of a layer of organic debris on the soil’s surface optimises the use of resources by reducing the need for fertilisers thanks to the accumulation of organic matter and increased water availability. Furthermore, reducing tillage and optimising inputs significantly reduces Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.
