At GOS ACCESO, we are committed to the integrity of our trials. As a result of the severe floods that struck Valencia a couple of months ago, we are currently assessing soil quality in the affected plots before resuming field trials.
Specifically, the affected project plot is located in Sueca, where floodwaters and mud have been deposited. Although the persimmon crop does not appear to have been damaged, it is important to assess certain soil parameters, such as heavy metal content before installing vegetative cover.

How Does the DANA Storm Affect Our Crops?
According to Revista AE de Divulgación Agroecológica (article: “Post-DANA Agricultural Soils and Their Necessary Recovery”), which features the expertise of Dr. Carlos García from CEBAS-CSIC, several potential issues are associated with the DANA weather event, including:
– Nutrient leaching and decreased soil fertility.
– Erosion of the most fertile topsoil layer, rich in organic matter, leaving behind degraded soils.
– Soil saturation due to excess water and subsequent soil compaction. In some soils, especially those with a clayey texture, a surface crust may form.
– Carrying of chemical pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, car oil, cosmetic products, heavy metals…
– Proliferation of fungi and bacteria due to excessive moisture.
Therefore, conducting comprehensive soil studies in the affected agricultural areas is essential to minimise the effects of the DANA on the economy and people’s health.
We will soon be publishing the results of the soil analyses, which will provide key insights into the condition of the affected soils.
